aws aurora read replica have same underlying storage as primary

What does it mean to have "Amazon Aurora Replicas share the same underlying storage as the primary instance". In other sentences, it says "Amazon Aurora Replicas share the same data volume as the primary". What do these sentences mean exactly? They certainly don't share the same hard drive, or else they would fail together. Plus, the replicas are spread over 3 AZ's. Can someone explain what they mean by "storage" and "volume" here. Thanks
