MySQL - Mixed Based Replication Between Two databases on thesame server

I am working on a solution. Formerly, I used replication becuase both databases were on separate servers. Now both databases have to reside on thesame server.

  1. Can replication work with the databases having different names (In the previous solution both databases had same name for replication to work. I was getting some kind of unknown database error in the former solution)

  2. Can Mixed-based replication work between two databases on thesame server? How would I handle configurations such as different server_id, master_port, master_user, master_host, etc.

  3. Is replication even the best way to solve this now? It is possible to merge both databases to one but that would mean exposing entire database now to the public. That's we have a website that would use this database and a corporate web app that would use same database. Formerly, with replication, both applications had their own unique DBs with the website having just a few tables from the corporate DB (tables for replication) so if one was able to hack the website, then the damage would be limited to website DB.

Appreciate help
